Brumbies Rugby has taken steps to ensure that all supporters can be present at CA Brumbies fixtures at Canberra Stadium by recognising the Companion Card. The Companion Card enables people with disability who require lifelong attendant care support to attend participating events and venues without incurring the cost of a second ticket for their companion. The Companion Card will therefore allow CA Brumbies and Wallabies fans with a disability to attend all CA Brumbies home matches at Canberra Stadium and all Test matches in Australia. Today Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children’s Services Bill Shorten MP, ACT Minister for Disability, Housing and Community Services Joy Burch MLA, CA Brumbies prop Guy Shepherdson, CA Brumbies supporter Tau Tanielu – who is wheelchair bound and requires a carer due to suffering cerebral palsy, severe spastic quadriplegia, scoliosis and epilepsy, were on hand to launch the partnership between Companion Card and Brumbies Rugby. Brumbies Rugby is the first Australian Investec Bank Super 14 side to honour the Companion Card. The Australian Rugby Union and its commitment to Rugby Connect, is also a proud affiliate of the Companion Card. Shepherdson says the Companion Card supports greater social inclusion for people with a disability and their carers. “This is a fantastic initiative to make sure that every Brumbies supporter can get to the game,” he said. “Tau is one of our most passionate supporters. He’s a proud Brumbies member, he’s been a regular at training sessions and he’s always at our games. It’s unfair to suggest that he should have to foot the bill for two tickets when, without the support of his companion, he couldn’t get to the game. “It’s great to see that the Brumbies are opening the door for Companion Card holders and their carers, and it’d be great to see all Australian Super 14 clubs and other Australian sporting teams follow suit and make it easier for their fans to support the side.” To utilise the Brumbies Rugby/Companion Card offer, cardholders simply present their card when booking or purchasing a ticket to receive a second ticket for their companion at no charge.
