Vikings secure back-to-back titles
The Tuggeranong Vikings have gone back to back, claiming their second John I Dent title in two years against Wests on Saturday afternoon.
Going into the match with just one loss in 25 games, Vikings faced one of their toughest hit-outs since the 2010 decider, eventually walking away as 29-17 point winners.
As they have all season Tuggeranong started the better side and ran out to a 19-3 half-time lead that would prove too difficult to run dwn.
First half tries to Beau Mokotupu, Jerome Niumata and Tim Cree set the tone of the first half with a solitary penalty to Jesse Mogg the only thing for Lions fans to cheer about heading to the sheds.
Wests started the second half with far more intent and structure, clawing themselves into the match with tries to Peter Kimlin and Chad Joseph to close the gap to two points at 19-17.
At that stager, Wests looked to have the upper hand in the match and with a bit more luck could easily have run away with it.
But it wasn’t to be, wityh Brumbies flyhalf Zack Holmes adding a penalty from 40 out to give his side breathing space before cutting straight through the defence to score the final try and finish Wests chances in 2012.
Holmes try was a controversial one, with Wests players claiming a blatant obstruction. From the sideline it looked as if the Wests players provided a valid arguement, but their fight held little value as the try and title were awarded to Tuggeranong.
Man of the Match was Vikings and former Brumbies Academy player James Turner, who was involved in all aspects of play.
Tuggeranong Vikings 29 (B. Mokotupu, J. Niumata, T. Cree, Z. Holmes tries; Z. Holmes 3 cons, pen) bt Western Districts Lions 17 (P. Kimlin, C. Joseph tries; J. Mogg 2 cons, pen).
